Direct vs indirect vs flameless — which heater do you need?

Direct fired heaters burn fuel and discharge the heated air — including combustion byproducts — directly into the space. High BTU output and cost-effective for open, well-ventilated spaces such as large tents, open structures, and outdoor work areas where fresh air circulation is adequate.

Indirect fired heaters use a heat exchanger to separate combustion gases from the heated air — delivering clean, dry heat into enclosed spaces. The right choice for enclosed buildings, structures under construction, and any environment where workers or materials require clean air. Also known as clean air heaters.

Flameless heaters produce heat with no open flame — making them the only safe option for hazardous environments including oilfield locations, pipeline sites, and any area with flammable gas or vapour risk. If your site has H2S or other gas hazards, flameless is the only appropriate heating solution.

Ground thaw units circulate heated fluid through hoses laid on or beneath the ground surface — thawing frozen ground to the depth required for excavation, foundation work, pipeline installation, and utility work. Essential for winter construction in Northern Alberta where ground frost can extend several feet deep.
